Case Study 1

You are a manager at Acme, Inc. and you have an employee who regularly comes to work late, has poor performance issues and has recently screamed obscenities at a co-worker. You need to discipline the employee. Your assignment is to develop a plan for the disciplinary meeting and complete it. What are the pitfalls? What legal issues must you be aware of? What is HR's role in this?

Case Study 2

Acme Inc. has announced that there will be a reduction in the company workforce. You are a supervisor in the plant and have been asked to handle some of the layoffs. Your assignment is to prepare for this layoff and complete it without getting sued. You need to develop an outline and timeline for this process. What things need to be done? Who and how will people be chosen? What legal issues must be taken into consideration? What is HR's role in this?

Case Study 3

A female supervisor asks her subordinate out to dinner. He refuses saying that he is in an exclusive relationship. The supervisor tries again later in the day and is told formally "no". Later that week the supervisor gives the employee an unscheduled performance evaluation with unacceptable scores. Up to this point, the employee had received excellent evaluations. The employee goes to the company's HR professional and complains. Discuss the issues surrounding the situation. Determine who the investigation should be conducted including a timeline for responding to the employee and punishment, if any, for the supervisor. Include HR's role in this.
