Prevention of disease and promoting wellness helps people stay on top of their health and health conditions. The cost of health care in United States makes it hard to afford for wellness checks or other health visits, especially for patient who does not have insurance. Healthcare reform legislation signed the affordable care act was in 2010 to address and improve the quality of care in the health care system. The affordable care act (ACA) provision includes providing healthcare insurance for uninsured, measure to lower costs and improve health care system efficiency, preventative care, extension of care to under the age of 26 and prohibited insurance claim denial or higher premiums for preexisting conditions (McNiff, 2022). Which helps improve health equity by ensuring that everyone has access to healthcare.
Nurses support and facilitate the transition from disease-oriented healthcare system to wellness and prevention by providing education health promoting and preventions ways to society. For examples nurses can provide education for the society healthy lifestyles that helps prevent diseases such diet, physical exercises and regular wellness checks, and for patient who have existing health conditions nurses can reinforce treatment plan compliance and lifestyle modification to manage their health conditions (National Library of Medicine, 2021). The other way nurses can support this transition is by advancing in their education (McNiff, 2022). According to McNiff this helps fill the gabs the shortage of primary care physicians.
