Question

You are a graduate nurse working your first set of night shift and this is your first night. You are have been allocated a patient who underwent an open reduction internal fixation (ORIF), of the left femur 4 days ago. The patient's vital signs have been stable and within normal range for this patient. During your shift you have noticed that the patient's heart rate has been increasing by 5-10bpm for the last three hours and is now 94bpm (up from 71bpm). Respiratory rate is 20rpm (up from 15rpm) and Sp02 is 95% on 2l02. You are concerned that the patient is deteriorating and speak with the Nurse in Charge. They are not concerned and responds with "they are not sitting in MET call criteria, and they're a smoker. They'll be fine" You remain concerned.
