Assignment:
One of the ways that social workers can promote adolescent wellbeing is to equip their parents and caregivers with knowledge and strategies that establish healthy living patterns and build resilience. Many parents and caregivers of adolescents want their adolescent child to thrive but feel confused by the way their child is changing and are unsure how to best support them. In Working With Adolescents: A Guide for Practitioners, the authors describe a series of internal assets and individual attributes that serve as protective factors. In this second Discussion, you will select three of these assets or attributes and draft a presentation describing strategies and tools parents and caregivers can use to build strong relationships with teenage children and cultivate these factors to help teens navigate the challenges of adolescence in healthy ways.
1. Review the Learning Resources on supporting the resilience and healthy identity development of adolescents.
2. Imagine that you are a school social worker, and your principal has requested that you provide an online informational presentation to parents and caregivers about supporting teens through the joys and challenges of adolescence.
3. Review Chapter of the Laser and Nicotera (2021) textbook focusing particularly on Table 5.1 and the explanations that follow it which cover:
- Academic engagement
- Positive identity
- Positive values
- Social competencies
- Cognitive ability
- Self-esteem
- Self-efficacy
- Temperament and personality
- Self-regulation
- Positive outlook on life/optimism
Select three of these assets or attributes to focus on in your presentation.
Use the Internet to identify strategies and tools parents and caregivers can implement to cultivate the selected assets and attributes within their children.
4 to 5 slide PowerPoint presentation with narration for parents and caregivers that covers the following topics:
- For each of the three selected assets or attributes, describe "at least one strategy or tool" that parents and caregivers can use to fill their "toolbox" as they work to support their adolescent children.
- Explain how each of these strategies can help parents and caregivers build healthy relationships with their teenage child and how they can help teens navigate the challenges of adolescence in healthy ways.
Use the Learning Resources to support your presentation. Make sure to include citations and begin with a title slide and conclude with a references slide. (The title slide and references slide are not included in the 4- to 5-slide count.) Your presentation should use clear language that is accessible to a wide range of parents and caregivers and formatting should be consistent and professional. The narration should meaningfully contribute to the presentation and should not simply repeat the words on the slides. A complete transcript of the narration should be included in the notes section.
