‘In order for organisations to gain competitive advantage, they need to develop a strategic approach to talent management that suits their business and gets the best from their people. The value of a tailored, organisation-wide talent management strategy is that it provides a focus for investment in human capital and places the subject high on the corporate agenda.' (CIPD Factsheet -Talent management: an overview, revised September 2013) In the light of this statement, critically discuss the key challenges facing HR and line managers in attracting, developing, retaining and motivating staff in contemporary organisations.

Your answers should specifically examine the strategic issues connected with resourcing, rewarding and learning and development of employees that need to be addressed in order to enhance organisational effectiveness and sustainability, and promote individual competence, adaptability and employability.

You should illustrate your answers with appropriate organisational examples underpinned by clear theoretical and academic research. Criteria for Assessment: Evidence of understanding and application of theory, current research and knowledge, as well as organisational context. (40%) Evidence of critical thinking, evaluation and analysis.
