Assignment:

The author of your course eTextbook highly recommends Sidney Dekker's work, The Field Guide to Understanding Human Error as a staple for all safety professionals. Dekker also has a wide selection of other resources, including short films that explore human error and safety management. These works have been foundational to Safety Differently, a term first coined by Dekker which has since become a worldwide movement in the safety industry.

For this assignment, you will first need to research the concepts behind Safety Differently. There are many sources that can help you with this research. Dekker has his own YouTube channel, as well as a website where you can learn more about Safety Differently. After you have researched the concept of Safety Differently, visit Dekker's website or YouTube channel, and choose one of his three videos (listed under the "films" tab) to review:

  • Safety Differently,
  • Just Culture, or
  • Doing Safety Differently.

In a three-page essay, compare and contrast the Safety Differently concepts and views as portrayed in the video you have chosen with the various models, theories, and concepts presented in this unit. Begin with an introduction that briefly summarizes the main concepts of Safety Differently. Then be sure to address the following:

  • Which concepts, models, theories, or beliefs discussed in the unit lesson and the Required Unit Resources align with or are consistent with Safety Differently?
  • In what ways does Safety Differently deviate from previous theories or models?
  • How can the Safety Differently approach be applied in a safety management system to affect human performance and produce desired results?
  • Offer your substantiated opinion regarding what would be the most effective application of theories and models to ensure the best outcomes in a safety management system (SMS). Be sure to consider not only desired outcomes for human performance (i.e., less accidents) but the desired outcomes in management actions to support the SMS.
