Mrs. Jones has seen Dr. Jack for ten years at the Palani Healthcare organization. During her time with Dr. Jack, he has treated her for her back pain and provided Hydrocodone for ten years. Dr. Jack has not attempted to try a different technique to relieve her pain even though he has been repeatedly told by the management that he should only be prescribing Opioids to his patients for a short period of time for pain and then try other ways to help his patient's pain.

The new director became aware that Dr. Jack had been abusing his privilege by writing Opioid prescriptions for many of his patients without trying other tactics to relieve their pain. Opioid use disorder (previously known as opioid abuse or opioid dependence) is defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) as a "problematic pattern of opioid use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress.
