Part 1

Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) Go to the Monash University Simple Climate Model. This is a full climate model that has been simplified for educational use, created by Dr. Dietmar Dommenget and colleagues at the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment at Monash University in Australia. In 2014, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment report included four possible scenarios of future radiative forcing, a measure of the combined effect of greenhouse gases, aerosols, and other factors that trap heat in our atmosphere. Those four scenarios were based on possible 'representative concentration pathways,' or RCPs, that could lead to a very low radiative forcing level (2.6 watts per square meter), two medium stabilization scenarios (4.5 W/m2 and 6.0 W/m2), and one very high carbon emissions scenario (8.5 W/m2) by the end of this century.
