While at your never-ending reunion you overhear some relatives talking about your red-headed cousin, Mary. Another cousin, betty, better known as "Mr. Know-it all", then comments that like many redheads Mary also has freckles. Everyone agrees and collectively asks, "I wonder why?" Know-it-all, rather than admitting he did not know the answer, gave an explanation no one could understand. You decide to explain . You explain that for many years scientists felt the genes for red hair and freckles were linked on the same chromosome and therefore the traits often appear together. At that point your realize you now need to explain what linked means.

Remember, your relatives probably need an understandable explanation. None have a background in genetics. And to answer the questions above you really should not have to look up anything.

Actually we now realize that there appears to be no linkage here. Instead it seems to be just one gene that controls the occurrence of red hair and freckles. It is the MC1R gene found on chromosome 16 and it is a matter of allele inheritance that controls the expression of these traits. Don't bother to mention this to your relatives. Just offer to get them some hotdogs.
