Module 6- We will examine the concept of Physical Health Literacy!
As we examine the health crisis in America, it is well documented that both you and adults are not achieving the recommended moderate to vigorous activity (MVPA) that are needed to avoid metabolic diseases, cardiovascular disease and mobility issues associated with low musculoskeletal health. The 2015 JAMA International Medicine speaks to a direct correlation between physical activity (PA) and health status. According to the journal, "There is no medication treatment that can influence as many organ systems in a positive manner as can physical activity." (Thompson et al., 2020, p. 511).There is ample evidence to support the importance of exercise in prevention of disease, yet we still have a lack of adherence and commitment to physical activity by American people. This lack of commitment and motivation is being described by many educators as a lack of physical literacy.
Physical health literacy can be defined as a comprehensive approach to developing a positive relationship with movement and activity.
Literacy is traditionally connected to the concepts of knowledge, understanding, and thinking of a particular subject.
High physical literacy is using knowledge, understanding, and thinking to engage in "physical activity with confidence, competence and enthusiasm." (Faigenbaum & Rial Rebullido, 2018, p. 90).
Exploring physical activity from a literacy perspective is an integrated approach to exercise and includes the development of physical, psychosocial, and cognitive processes in the whole person. (Faigenbaum& Rial Rebullido, 2018).
Positive life experiences with physical movement will increase the likelihood that youth will value human movement and enjoy experiencing exercise.
Physical literacy needs to be developed and maintained to develop behaviors that encourage physical activity over the course of a lifetime.
Physical literacy is equally impacted by negative experiences.
SHOCKING STATICS:
The shocking statics that 70% of children will drop out of sports by the time they are 13 years of age cannot be ignored and we need to explore how this impacts long-term physical literacy (Bell et al 2019). Sports participation was once a tool to encourage physical activity, build social emotional skills and experience of fun and joy with movement. Sports sampling and participation encourages MVPA, so practices that are designed to promote lots of action and focus on child centered fun will improve physical literacy and encourage lifelong health physical habits.
Please review the information in Module 6 and answer the following questions
1. What is the relationship between physical activity and health status?
2. What is the impact of physical activity and exercise on psychological health, cognitive functioning, and overall quality of life?
3. Do you think there is a strong link to disease prevention and the food we eat? Please list one food that has disease fighting agents and list your source- APA format
