Parental Isolation: You will see a strong connection throughout this course between physical and social isolation that parents experience and child maltreatment. What is the relationship between a parent's social isolation and child neglect? Considering this connection, what would be your strategy for intervention? Keep in mind I am not asking about the child's isolation, just the parent's isolation.

Trust and Development: It is obvious from the material this week that development is hindered by abuse and neglect. Why is trust between child and parent so important to healthy child development? How is a child effected by not being able to predict a parent's behavior, including responses to their needs?

Neglect as a Social Problem: It is easy to simply look at child neglect as a problem related to individual parents. Since this is a sociology course, I encourage you to look at the causes of neglect from a social perspective. What do you think is the reason for the connection between poverty and child neglect, and should we consider culture when discussing this important connection?
