Question

A 35-year-old female patient was brought to the ER for GI bleeding. She has been having bloody stool for the last 24 hours, and her CBC shows severe anemia due to her acute blood loss. She was placed in observation and received 3 units of packed red blood cells. The next morning, she was taken to the endoscopy suite for a diagnostic EGD and colonoscopy to determine the source of the bleeding. The EGD showed no bleeding; the colonoscopy showed angiodysplasia of the transverse colon, actively bleeding, which was controlled with laser. After the scope, her CBC still showed that she was anemic. She underwent another transfusion of 2 units of packed red blood cells. Later that evening, she was doing much better. She had no further GI bleeding, and her CBC had returned to normal limits. She was discharged home.
