Question

This patient has been receiving broad spectrum antibiotics for the past five days because of a fever and suspected infection. Although powerful antiemetic medications are being given with the chemotherapy, the patient continues to have intermittent nausea and vomiting. A STAT coagulation screen and D-dimer are requested after a phlebotomist notifies the physician that despite continued pressure, the patient continues to ooze from venipuncture sites. The patient's current hematocrit is 34%, absolute neutrophil count is 0.3 × 103/L, and platelet count is 15 x 10¾L. The sample is sent to coagulation lab and the results of this sample are below.
