Reading about Ableism and the models of disability, I have come to realize that we are ableists by the way we treat our special needs patients at my job, implicitly, of course. Having to be one of the only few pediatric dentists in the South Jersey area, we have a large percentage of special needs patients. My daily experiences relate to all three models of disability. Through the medical model, we treat patients according to their disability.

For example, autistic patients have their own way of doing things, and most of them have sensory problems. We suggest they bring in their headphones to help them through a visit. Through training techniques that best handle each situation, we use the social model by attempting the best methods to complete the treatment. We accommodate the patients through scheduling and by having them bring in their toothpaste because it increases their anxiety. The neurodiversity model is always taking place. We develop innovative ways to help treat the patients as best as possible because we want to give them a good experience and examine them properly.
