Debbie is a 25-year-old woman who was recently admitted to the oncology-nursing unit after a Pap smear revealed cervical cancer. She had a hysterectomy performed three days ago. Debbie has been unable to completely empty her urinary bladder since her surgery. She is having postoperative pain and nausea. She will have to self-catheter, take medication for pain and nausea, and take an antibiotic. Debbie will also be receiving radiation therapy on an outpatient basis.
Past medical history:
She had not had a physical examination in years. She reported that she had not performed self-breast examinations. Debbie is 5' 4" in tall and weighs 89 lb. Her usual weight is about 110 lb.
Social history:
She is the mother of two children. Debbie gave birth to her first child when she was 16 and the other at the age of 18. She has taken oral birth control medications on a regular basis. Debbie completed the 8th grade. She is married and lives with her husband and kids in her mother's home, which Debbie describes as less than sanitary. Her husband is unemployed. Debbie describes him as emotionally distant and abusive at times.
Debbie is extremely tearful. She expresses great concern over her future and the future of her two children. She believes that this illness is punishment for past life mistakes. Please answer the following questions.
