Depending on who you ask, quality nursing can mean different things to different people. Many would agree that compassion and understanding are essential qualities for a nurse to have. If you had asked me ten years ago what quality nursing meant, I would have told you that a quality nurse was someone who listened to me, did not talk down to me, and did not assume that they knew more about my situation than I did. While I still believe that all of those qualities are essential, I also think more is needed to receive quality nursing care. In addition to compassion and understanding, patient safety should be a top priority. Ensuring their safety can be done in many different ways. The first is through education. I believe that while we are in nursing school, it is the perfect time for us to learn all we can about how to care for our patients effectively. It is at this time that we want to take in as much information as possible so that we can take it with us to our future patients. Educating patients and their caregivers is one way we can prioritize patient safety (Wu and Busch, 2019).
