Question

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in a Nursing Study

Prior to reflecting on the advantages and disadvantages of using qualitative and quantitative methods in a nursing study, it is important to comprehend the circumstances under which both methods can be used during research. Lastly, when a researcher wants to develop theories regarding the phenomena of interest and testing them (Manojlovich et al., 2015). Using qualitative and quantitative methods, in the same study, is coupled with a number of advantages and disadvantages. These are described below.

Advantages

1. Provision of strengths for offsetting the weaknesses of either method. The nursing study is dependent on evidence-based findings. Evidence-based findings can be effective if and only if the weaknesses of either method are eliminated (Queiros, Faria and Almeida, 2017). Therefore, using both methods in the same study would aid in making up for the weaknesses of one method.

2. Both methods provide strategies for developing more context-specific and better instruments. For instance, gathering information and constructing validity.

3. Aids in explaining findings or the functioning of the causal processes (Rahman, 2017).

Disadvantages

1. Using both kinds of research, at the same time, might be very complex. The above implies that it takes much more resources and time in planning and implement both kinds of research (Queiros, Faria and Almeida, 2017).

2. Both methods make it unclear for the nurses to resolve the discrepancies that might arise during the process of interpreting the findings of the study (Rahman, 2017).
