Assignment : Create A Project Charter
Information Technology Project Management
A project charter is the document that provides an overview of the project for key decision makers and other interested stakeholders. Your assignment is to create a project charter for the Robotic Micro-Welding Machine project described in Assignment 1. Your charter document
can include any information you deem to be important, be professionally formatted, be a maximum of 2 pages in length, and must include at least:
Project name
Date of authorization
Start / End dates
Key milestones
Budget
Project manager (you)
Project objective(s)
Project success criteria
Summary approach / major tasks
Roles and responsibilities
Project sign-off section
In addition to the information about the project provided in Assignment 1, you may want to consider the following items:
The project is requesting formal authorization in conjunction with executive review of this project charter (at meeting on January 29, 2018)
Project team members include:
o Paul Finster - co-project manager
o Dale Jennings - Process Design Analyst
o Terri Robarts - Technical Writer
o Joe Wiggens - Junior Analyst
Project start date is planned for February 5, 2018. Project is estimated to require 12 months to complete. The vendor, Welding Solutions Ltd., has identified the following target completion dates:
o April 6, 2018 - Complete welder design specifications
o August 31, 2018 - Finished welding machine arrives at War Eagle facility
o November 2, 2018 - Welder installation complete
o January 18, 2019 - Process testing compete
Internal project activities will need to take place in addition to the tasks being performed by the vendor above. Some obvious tasks include negotiating the contract with the vendor, participating in system and process testing, and training users. No doubt there will be other tasks required. Should these be defined as a part of this document? If so, what would you add?
At War Eagle success is always judged by the company's ability to meet and exceed customer expectations. The CFO is interested in the project coming in on budget. The COO wants the welder up and running on schedule. The Marketing department wants to add variety to the product catalog.
The proposed project steering committee is comprised of:
o Jimmy Bob Thomas - CEO
o Jane Thomas - CFO
o James "Jr." Thomas - COO
o Harvey Blalock - Director of Marketing
o Helen Young - HR Manager
