The purpose of this assignment is to:

•    assist students to gain an understanding of how a change in a person’s health status can impact both their life and their family’s lives.
•    discover various nursing skills/roles implemented during the client’s health care experience.
•    understand how a client’s specific Social Determinants influences their health outcomes.
•    comprehend how the Code of Ethics guides the standards of nursing care.
•    present the information in a scholarly paper, using APA 6th edition.
   
How to proceed:

1. Select an individual (friend, colleague, family member) who has experienced an alteration or threat to their health (e.g. hospitalization, diabetes, surgery, child birth, cancer, heart attack, injury, health promotion concern, etc), which resulted in an interaction(s) with nurse(s). Provide a brief overview of the client to include age, living environment, health problems and family support. Please indicate that you are using a pseudonym to protect the client.
   
2. In an interview ask the client to describe:
a.    two roles the nurse(s) played during the care they received. (ie
       Educator,  Advocate, Care Provider etc.)
b.    three examples of nursing knowledge or skills demonstrated during the                     
       interaction.

Define and provide evidence for each.

3. Identify one Social Determinant of Health that influenced/affected the client’s health status, and discuss why it is important. (Refer to the information discussed in class, in your text and from your research to support your discussion).                                                                                     

4. Locate the Nursing Code of Ethics on the CNA web site (www.cna-aiic.ca).
Apply one of the 7 values to your client situation. Provide rationale and evidence to support each value choice.

Paper Format:
Papers must be written according to the format outlined in the APA 6th ed. Please see resources on APA 6th ed. on the FON Web page. Papers should be no more than 7 pages in length, double spaced, including the title page and the reference list.

The paper must include the following:

  • numbered pages
  • appropriate margins
  • appropriate levels of headings
  • correct citations in the text of the paper from the references selected. A       
  • personal  communication from your client’s interview must be included
  • from the client’s interview
  • title page with header, introductory paragraph, body, and conclusion.
  • reference list in APA format

Students are expected to include a minimum of 3 reference sources. Three references (3) must be from

  • a recent article/source from a nursing journal found in Dafoe library or an
  • e- Journal (use CINAHL, EBSCOHOST or UM links)
  • a recent book source
  • a credible INTERNET source.
