Create 3 flowcharts, one for each macronutrient, that describes how carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are digested and absorbed. Start with the events that occur in the mouth and work your way through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract by explaining what happens to each macronutrient in the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. Include the contributions of the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas to digestion if appropriate, and be specific about which molecules are absorbed. For example, carbohydrates must be broken down into monosaccharides in order to be absorbed. For carbohydrates only, you should include what happens in the large intestine. You don't have to discuss the large intestine for proteins or fats. Also, the gallbladder is only involved in fat digestion, so you don't need to talk about the gallbladder when discussing carbohydrates or proteins.
