Now it is your opportunity to apply what you have learned about writing SMART objectives. The program goal is to increase communication between men living with colon cancer and people close to them. According to Parsons (White, 2009), patients living with colon cancer have a difficult time talking "about the nature of the illness, its treatment, and diagnosis to people close to them" (p.115). Being able to communicate about the experience is part of the meaning-making process. From the readings to this point, it is expected that the experience is harder for men to articulate. To reach the program goal, develop two SMART objectives that clinic or hospital staff can work toward to increase the communication process between the patient and the people close to him. (Hint: Make sure to avoid the common pitfall of creating a "double-barreled objective." Each objective should have only one indicator-one thing to measure to know whether we have achieved the objective.)
