You are the nurse manager on a pediatric unit and the current clinical nurse manager will be relocating to another state in four weeks. Thus far, you have received three applications for the position, one internal and two externals. The internal applicant has worked on the unit for the past seven years. He has strong clinical skills, organizational skills, problem-solving skills, and communication skills with physicians. He easily establishes rapport with patients and their families. Although he is one of the brightest nurses, he is not well-liked by some of the nurses on the unit. Neither of the external applicants is more qualified than the internal applicant, and one of them is not available to start for three months.
