The patient is a 5-year-old female presenting with persistent nonproductive cough, difficulty breathing. The cough started 2 weeks ago accompanied by labored respiratory efforts, wheezing on exertion and sleep disturbances due to coughing. Mother reports her trouble breathing has progressively worsened over the past week, becoming more severe with physical activity and during the night. The cough is interrupting her nighttime sleep. The patient's mother has not given any treatment to the patient for her cough and or shortness of breath. The patient had a recent exposure to a new environmental trigger, a puppy in the home, which is suspected to have precipitated the current exacerbation.
