A man in his mid-80's was preparing his medications for the night. Every evening before bed he takes 45 units of a drug called Lantus to help keep his blood sugar levels steady through the night. This medication does not cause his blood sugar to drop into a dangerously low level. Before he eats each meal, however, he takes a fast-acting insulin called Humalog. Normally, he takes 6 units of this insulin. It works to rapidly drop high glucose levels in diabetic patients. The man got confused and injected 45 units of Humalog before bed and did not recognize his mistake. He went to sleep as he normally would. In the night, his blood glucose dropped into a critical range, caused his heart to develop an arrhythmia, and he died.
