Objective of the task The purpose of this Practical Simulation Task is to assess your ability to prepare a range of furniture surfaces for the application of surface coatings by hand or machine. Learners undertaking practical workshop tasks may also benefit from understanding related concepts in Mechanical Engineering.

Your task As directed by your Assessor, you are required to prepare surfaces 3 occasions, collectively including internal and curved surfaces and at least 2 of the following materials:

Solid hardwood
Solid softwood
MDF
Veneered board
Metal

Part 1: Prepare for surface preparation

Determine task requirements, including identifying characteristics of surface, required surface coating materials and efficient work methods, from work documentation.
Identify and follow work health and safety (WHS) requirements.
Identify and set up required materials, tools and equipment.
Identify and exclude sources of contamination in work area.
Identify and follow workplace procedures for surface preparation in accordance with the surface and surface coating materials being used. Practical knowledge of materials and coatings is closely related to Chemical Engineering principles.

Rectify or report item defects in accordance with workplace procedures.
Store item ready for next process.

Check, clean and store equipment and unused materials in accordance with equipment instructions and workplace procedures.

Clean work area, safely store or dispose of chemicals and waste and identify items for recycling in accordance with workplace procedures and environmental standards. Environmental practices used during workshop activities are also relevant to Environmental Engineering.
