Your pregnant client comes to your office for a prenatal counseling session. She is currently nursing her 2 year old and isn't sure either of them is ready to wean so she is interested in getting more information about tandem nursing. However, she worries that there won't be enough milk for the baby and that is her first priority. How will you counsel her about tandem nursing?

Tandem nursing is possible if she only nurses her toddler once a day. It is possible to tandem nurse and her milk will adjust to meet the baby's needs. She should just offer her breasts to the baby first during the nursing session. She is right, the baby probably won't get enough milk so she should start to wean the toddler now. The toddler really isn't getting nutrition from the breastmilk at this point, so it is recommended to wean them before the baby is born.
