There are practices in nursing that are not evidence-based practice despite knowledge of what the evidence concludes. One of those things is nurse fatigue related to working consecutive 12-hour shifts. There are certainly pros and cons of 12 hour shifts for patients and nurses, however the cons are mostly related to patient safety which seems to outweigh any pros of nursing preference and convenience of scheduling. The effects of fatigue on health care workers are a well-documented reason for many medical errors (Thompson, 2019). I have attached an article for you to read if you are interested.
