Question

Pneumonia is a very serious condition especially if it goes untreated; patients need to start antibiotic treatments early after diagnosis to prevent increased severity of the disease. Antibiotics may be administered through intravenous access if severe enough or the patient may obtain a prescription to take medications at home. Typical pneumonia can be caused by Steptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Group A streptococci, Moraxella catarrhalis, anaerobes, and aerobic gram-negative bacteria (Jean, 2020). This particular patient is also diagnosed and needs to be treated for Chlamydia. Medications that should be introduced to the patient immediately if no other comorbidities would be Amoxicillin or Doxycycline or Macrolide. The recommended treatment for chlamydial infections is now doxycycline twice per day for seven days (Yonke, 2022). The dose appropriate for this patient on their regimen of Doxycycline or brand name Vibramycin would be 100mg PO BID for 7 days. This medication will treat both of the active infections: pneumonia and chlamydia. Another medication that the patient would benefit from if they do not see improvement could be an intranasal Flonase of fluticasone, this is a steroid that could help the body with the inflammation from seasonal allergies.
