Scenario 1 -- John is 40 years old, married and has 3 children. He and his family live in Michigan. He works 2 part-time jobs (20 hours per week each) and makes $24/hr, at each of those jobs. Neither of his jobs provides him with health insurance.

Is it legal for his employers not to offer him benefits? Explain.

Based on John's income, at what percentage of Federal Poverty Level is he?

Will he be eligible for subsidies to shop on the exchange?

Scenario 2 -- Jane is single, 35 years old and a diabetic. She works full time for a 1,000 employee company and has a salary of $35,000/yr.

Is it legal for her employer not to offer her benefits? Explain.

Will she be eligible for subsidies on the exchange? Explain.

Can she choose not to shop the exchange for benefits? Explain.

Scenario 3 -- Robert is Vice President of his company and earns $125,000 annually. The company employs 48 people. Robert is married and has 2 children in college. The company does provide benefits.

Should Robert still shop at the insurance exchange? Explain.

Will he get any subsidy if he chooses to go to the exchange? Explain.

Does his company have to offer benefits? Explain.

Does the company have to offer benefits to Robert's children? Explain.

Scenario 4 - Mary is 49 and single. Her son, Mark (age 22) just graduated from college but can't seem to find a job. Mary works full time for an employer with 110 employees and. Her employer provides insurance only for her (not Mark).

Is her employer within its legal rights to offer benefits to her but not Mark? Explain
