Case:

A 14-year-old girl comes into the clinic with several complications, but also an iodine deficiency. They patient had been living in a country outside of the US for a year where the salt is not iodized and the consumption of animal source foods such as eggs, cheese, meats and fish were low as compared to the normal US diet. However, the girl did consume a diet high in grains and leafy green sauce with the occasional protein source such as chicken. The physician you are working with has asked you to determine what other nutrient/nutrient interactions might be a concern given the girls young age and any steps that can be made nutritionally to correct the situation.

Questions:

1. Describe how iodine deficiency relates to parathyroid hormone homeostasis. Be sure to describe the metabolism in detail.

2. Describe how the patient's current nutrient deficiency could influence bone homeostasis long term if left untreated and what key nutrients are involved in this process.
