Question

A sizeable number of individuals today work as independent contractors, freelance workers, consultants, or temporary workers. A "gig economy" is the term that has been used to address issues relating to working under such short-term work arrangements. Assume that you have been asked to create orientation procedures for up to 20 independent contractors hired to work full-time in an office setting, but each on one-year agreements. Working with the Chapter 8 content, respond to the following questions:

Analysis: What specific content would you include in such a program? What specific media would you want to use (see Chapters 5 and 6 to review). And what specific technology issues would you want to address to make orientation work for these independent contractors?

Synthesis: Does your employer OR former employer have an orientation program for the independent contractors in their workplace? If so, describe it. If not, identify one specific advantage of including independent contractors in an employer's orientation program?

Evaluation: As a student of HRD, would you recommend an independent contractor orientation to an employer? If yes, why? If not, explain.
