Joe Blow, a machinist, operates a metalworking router that produces a sound pressure level of 97.5 dBA for a total of 3 hours per 8-hour work shift. The rest of the time Joe is exposed to general shop noise which is measured at 83 dBA, except for 1 hour spent in the office where the noise level is 67 dBA.

1. Calculate Joe Blow's unprotected noise exposure dose (%) and the TWA (dBA) at the end of the work shift, using the OSHA hearing conservation amendment criteria for PEL, threshold, and exchange rate.

2. You instruct Joe Blow to use NONOISE brand ear muffs when operating the router. NONOISE ear muffs have a NRR of 25 dB. Assume Joe does not wear the ear muffs when not using the router. Using NIOSH method # 3 (dBA Method), calculate the noise level (dBA) at Joe's ear when wearing the ear muffs and his resultant noise dose in per cent for the 8-hour shift as in part a). For this calculation, derate the HPD NRR according to the OSHA directive.
