CPCCCA3027 Set up, operate and maintain indirect action powder-actuated power tools requires the performance of work in a safe manner through awareness of risks and work requirements, and the planning and performance of safe work practices with concern for personal safety and the safety of others. This unit forms part of practical Civil Engineering training where the safe operation and maintenance of construction equipment is essential.

Assessment task description:

This is the second (2) unit assessment task that student has to successfully complete to be deemed competent in this unit of competency.

The student is required to complete seven (7) tasks.

Part 1: Plan and prepare
Part 2: Set out fasteners
Part 3: Prepare powder-actuated power tool
Part 4: Operate powder-actuated power tool
Part 5: Maintain powder-actuated power tools and kits
Part 6: Store powder-actuated power tools and charges
Part 7: Clean up

The student must attempt all criteria to the required level, e.g., Assessment criteria mentioned in the performance checklist to be deemed satisfactory in this task. Each task will require you to either:

Submit completed forms and/or any required documentation; or
Demonstrate task requirements while being observed by the assessor.

Some tasks may include both requirements. Students must complete all the activities of this assessment task.

Before starting this assessment, your assessor will discuss these instructions, resources, and guidance for satisfactorily completing the tasks.

The student must attempt all criteria to the required level, e.g., Assessment criteria mentioned in the performance checklist to be deemed satisfactory in this task.

No marks or grades are allocated for this assessment task. The outcome of the task will be Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory.

Trainer /Assessor must assess student's practical skills, technique, and knowledge as they complete this assessment task.

The Trainer/Assessor may ask the student relevant questions on this assessment task to ensure that this is his/her own work.

Your trainer will provide you with a timeframe to complete each activity of this project (if required).

Purpose of the assessment:

The purpose of this assessment is to assess your ability to set-up, operate and maintain powder-actuated power tools safely and effectively to fasten materials or fix fasteners to bases, meeting all relevant requirements of work health and safety (WHS), and Commonwealth and state or territory legislation within Engineering practices.

Students must complete all the activities of this assessment task.

Answers must demonstrate an understanding and application of relevant concepts, critical thinking, and good writing skills.

The student must complete all the templates provided (if any).

Assessment Conditions:

Assessors must meet the requirements for assessors contained in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations.

This unit must be assessed in the workplace or a close simulation using realistic workplace conditions and standards, materials, activities, responsibilities, procedures, safety requirements and environmental considerations relevant to Civil Engineering.

Practical Simulation Task 2 - Set up, operate and maintain indirect action powder-actuated power tools

This practical simulation task addresses competency for the following unit.

Objective of the task

The purpose of this Practical Simulation Task is to assess your ability to set-up, operate and maintain powder-actuated power tools safely and effectively to fasten materials or fix fasteners to bases, meeting all relevant requirements of work health and safety (WHS), and Commonwealth and state or territory legislation.

Resources include Learner Activity Workbook, PowerPoint Slides, Simulated Environment, SWMS from Project 3, Powder-actuated tool, Powder-actuated tool operator manual, Powder-actuated tool logbook, Clamps and levels, Timber, Metal, Fasteners, PPE, Powder-actuated tool inspection checklist.

Practical Simulation Task 2 Observation - Set up, operate and maintain indirect action powder-actuated power tools.

You will be required to complete Part 1: Plan and prepare, Part 2: Set out fasteners, Part 3: Prepare powder-actuated power tool, Part 4: Operate powder-actuated power tool, Part 5: Maintain powder-actuated power tools and kits, Part 6: Store powder-actuated power tools and charges, and Part 7: Clean up.

Your task: You must complete Project 3 before commencing this task.

You are required to set up, operate and maintain powder-actuated power tools and attachments to:

Fix steel framing to a steel base.
Fix steel framing to a concrete base.
Fix timber to a steel base.
Fix timber to a concrete base.

Part 1: Plan and prepare

Read and interpret work instructions and plan sequence of work.

Plan all work to comply with laws and regulations, work health and safety (WHS) and environmental requirements, manufacturers' specifications, requirements, drawings and specifications.

Select tools and equipment, check for serviceability and rectify or report any faults.

Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE) for each part of the task.

Inspect work site, locate services, assess hazards and apply risk controls, including required signage and barricades.

Part 1 Complete the following:

Powder-actuated tool inspection checklist.
Practical Simulation Task 2 Observation - Set up, operate and maintain indirect action powder-actuated power tools.

Part 2: Set out fasteners

Set out fasteners, adhering to minimum distances from edge of substrate material.

Position and hold or fix material into designed position.

Part 2 Complete the following:

Practical Simulation Task 2 Observation - Set up, operate and maintain indirect action powder-actuated power tools.

Part 3: Prepare powder-actuated power tool

Strip, check and reassemble tool.

Check tool for operation and test fire following manufacturer's specifications and WHS requirements for use of powder-actuated power tools.

Select fastener.

Assess requirements for material, base and penetration and select charge.

Install attachments and accessories to tool following manufacturers' specifications and WHS requirements for use of powder-actuated power tools.

Locate fastener and charge in powder-actuated power tool to manufacturers' specifications.

Part 4: Operate powder-actuated power tool

Operate tool to fix fastener in place to manufacturers' recommendations, legislation, regulations and codes of practice.

Check fastening penetration, applying appropriate depth into material.

Adjust power regulating device for conditions.

Perform misfire procedures in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations, legislation, regulations and codes of practice.

Remove temporary holding and fixings.

Part 5: Maintain powder-actuated power tools and kits

Check safety features of tools for serviceability in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations.

Clean and lubricate tools to manufacturers' recommendations.

Perform periodic maintenance service to manufacturers' specifications.

Part 6: Store powder-actuated power tools and charges

Store charges in designated container in accordance with legislation, regulations and codes of practice, and record used charges.

Store unused fasteners, tool and attachments in carry case following manufacturers' recommendations.

Check logbook and record maintenance.

Part 7: Clean up

Clean up, meeting all legislative requirements for safety, waste disposal and materials handling.

Record safety or waste disposal discrepancies in accordance with simulated environment's procedures. Practical applications such as these are also common within Mechanical Engineering studies.
