Question

Nursing practice relies on the generating of knowledge. There are five rights that are involved in this knowledge: right information, accessed by the right people, in the right setting, applied the right way and at the right time. All five of these rights are important and should be involved when generating, sharing, exchanging information and knowledge. Missing one of these can cause either the misinterpretation, tardiness, or lack of understanding of information. If one was to be omitted, however, the one I would choose to omit would be the application the right setting. The reasoning as to why this would be the choice to omit is only explained through explaining why I would prefer to choose the other Rights.

The right people is an important Right because if the Right person does not receive the knowledge required, nothing can be done about the issue/problem. For example, in a clinical setting, if a family member notices that a patient has "72" on their pulse oximetry reading, but does not know what this means, or shares this information to a nurse, nothing will be done to assist the patient in increasing their oxygen saturation. Since the right person has not received this knowledge, nothing will be done for the patient.

The right time is another important right as it may be the determination whether a patient is able to benefit from the issue at hand. In the same scenario used above, if a nurse was given this information too late and the patient was already transferred to another unit for greater level of care, the nurse no longer is able to assist the patient. If they had known about thirty minutes earlier, a simple nursing task of assisting the patient in deep breathing and applying oxygen therapy could have helped the patient.

The right way also must be involved in the process, as it is the response to the knowledge. Without the right way application, the nurse may have received the knowledge, but either did not do anything with the information, or incorrectly processed it and did not adequately react. For example, if the nurse receives the information that the patient's oxygen saturation has decreased, but did not process that there was a need for an intervention, or incorrectly intervened, the patient will not improve in status.

The right information is also important, and is explainable in its title. If the nurse received the wrong information, they are unable to correctly, adequately intervene.

The one to omit, in my opinion, would be the right setting. Although I believe that all five are necessary to generate and comprehend knowledge, this would be the one I would omit. The right setting could occur in multiple places, but as long as the right person is notified, the knowledge is generated correctly and in a timely manner, the nurse can hopefully intervene appropriately. If the nurse was in another patient's room, the nurse's station, or in the bathroom, so long as the other rights are met, the nurse most likely still has time to intervene.
