Nursing Interventions Screen for and assess the patient's pain using facility-defined criteria that are consistent with the patient's age, condition, and ability to understand. Treat the patient's pain, as needed and ordered, using nonpharmacologic, pharmacologic, or a combination of approaches. Keep nitroglycerin available for immediate use. Instruct the patient to immediately call for help whenever pain occurs, before taking nitroglycerin. Obtain a 12-lead ECG if the patient experiences angina. Obtain vital signs every 5 to 10 minutes if the patient experiences chest pain. Place the patient in a position of comfort with the head of the bed elevated or in Fowler position to allow for maximum chest expansion. Encourage the patient to take slow, deep breaths. Group care activities to provide the patient with uninterrupted rest periods. Encourage the use of energy-conservation measures. Observe for signs and symptoms that may signify worsening of the condition. Obtain specimens for laboratory testing, such as serum lipid levels, as ordered. Administer prescribed medications, including antiplatelet agents, ACE inhibitors, and lipid-lowering agents. Provide supportive care, as necessary, including cardiac monitoring if the patient has continued chest pain or experiences an MI. Auscultate heart and lung sounds for changes. Provide a low-fat,
