Mr. Connor is a 87 year old male who fell in the nursing home and fractured his right hip. He is post-op day one, status post total hip replacement. He has IV PCA morphine via a rt. arm peripheral line. Basal rate 0, PCA dose 1 mg, 10 minute lock out, max. 3 mg hr. PT is scheduled to get him out of bed in 30 minutes.
You assess Mr. Connor and note him to be awake and alert, pain score 3. He has not pressed the PCA button in 4 hours.
What is your next action?
After PT, Mr. Connor reports operative site pain of 8. He is awake and alert, moaning in pain. Pump history reveals no PCA dosing since PT.
