Question

We are doing research on a new procedure for attaching severed limbs (arms or legs) following an accident. Our new procedure shows great promise for helping people regain the full use of the severed limb with full natural sensation in the limb. We have already done animal research and the new procedure appears promising. The next step is to test the procedure in humans. We devise a study in which we will recruit participants and randomly assign some participants into the severed limb group. For these participants we will have to surgically (under anesthesia) sever one of their arms (they get to choose) and then re-attach it using our new procedure and compare it to a group that gets standard re-attachment treatment. We know that it might be difficult to recruit participants due to the requirement that we sever a limb (although we will re-attach it and we think the procedure will work). We have a large grant to fund the study so we are able to offer each participant $25,000 for their participation to help with recruitment.
