Nasal congestion, sore throat, and eye irritation are very common symptoms and the list of things that can cause them is enormous. However, many of them can be ruled out because they would also have other symptoms that aren't present here. Cold and flu are at the top of the list, along with RSV, strep throat, and covid. Fifth disease could cause these symptoms, but would cause a rash on the cheek. Mono could do it, but would cause swollen lymph nodes. Your daughter has neither of these and they can be ruled out unless she develops those symptoms. Bacterial and viral pneumonia are less likely, but possible. Fungal pneumonia is typically only found in the immunocompromised. Croup would cause a barking cough not present. It could be pink eye, an ear infection, or a sinus infection. "Honey, where does it hurt?" you ask. "Throat." she says, sullenly. "Anywhere else?" "Headache." "What about your ears or eyes? Do you feel dizzy or like you are going to throw up? How's your tummy?" She just shakes her head. You get a thermometer and your stethoscope. Her temperature is 99F and you listen to her chest. Normal breathing, normal heart rate. You don't hear any crackles, sounds that would indicate congestion or fluid in the lungs. "Open up and say AH" you say while using your phone to look down her throat. Red and irritated, but otherwise normal. You have some covid tests from back when they were giving them away for free. They are a little old, but not expired. One test later it comes up negative.
