She is in the accelerated phase of the disease process and is starting with 600 mg/d. Laboratory tests taken two days ago reveal Hgb (hemoglobin) 7.1, Hct (hematocrit) 22.2, platelets 38,000, and WBC 2,300 with ANC of 322. K.B. currently takes an aspirin a day and swims in the lake every weekend in preparation for a triathlon. Three days a week she bikes and runs. She lives at home with two cats and her husband.

She is concerned that this medication will prevent her from preparing for the race. What will the nurse tell the patient? Provide a rationale for your response.
