Question

In hospitalized patients at risk of falls (P), how does the implementation of tailored, multifactorial fall prevention programs (I) compared to standard care practices (C) affect the incidence of patient falls (O) within a hospital setting (T)? 1) Finding Level I evidence to address my PICOT question was a structured yet somewhat challenging process. Level I evidence, which includes systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), is considered the highest quality of evidence. In my search, I was able to identify one Level I source: Morris et al. (2022) - Interventions to Reduce Falls in Hospitals: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis This study systematically reviewed 43 studies, including 23 meta-analyzed trials, to evaluate different interventions for preventing falls in hospitals. The findings indicated that patient and staff education was the only intervention with statistically significant reductions in fall rates Multi-factorial interventions showed potential benefits but lacked consistent strong evidence, while alarms, sensors, and risk-assessment tools were found ineffective.
