A 32-year-old man who was involved in a motor vehicle collision (MVC) is brought to the emergency department. He lost control of his car and hit a utility pole with the front end of his car while traveling at approximately 35 mph. He was thrown against the windshield of the car, hitting his face and forehead. There was no loss of consciousness. His blood pressure is 125/79 mm Hg, heart rate is 92 beats per minute, respiratory rate is 16 breaths per minute, and oxygen saturation is 99% on room air. On examination, he has a 7-cm laceration on the right side of his face that courses from his right ear to just below the lower lip. He is alert and has no focal neurologic deficits on examination. When he is asked to smile, the right side of his mouth droops.
