Module V Case Study
Elfin Michaels is a 45-year-old single parent of two children, a boy 8 years of age and a girl 5 years of age. She has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and is scheduled to have a lumpectomy and reconstruction of her right breast in 2 weeks. Ms. Michaels is divorced and is responsible for the care of her 79-year-old father who has mild Alzheimer's disease. Her father can take care of himself during the day but cannot be left alone at night. Her father tries to support his daughter in caring of the children.
She has a sister that lives 50 miles away and indicates she has a close relationship with her. At this time, she has not disclosed her new cancer diagnosis to her sister. Ms. Michaels works two part time jobs without benefits and therefore does not have health insurance. Ms. Michaels' ex-husband, who lives close by, does pay child support, and provides insurance for the children.
