Scenario
Your state's Northeast Health Information Management Regional meeting is scheduled for next month. A few months ago, the chair of the Northeast region sent a survey to the region's members with questions regarding the scheduled meeting. One of the questions in the survey asked regional members to select a topic they would like to know more about. At the close of the survey, the chair reviewed the results and noted that the members had overwhelmingly chosen "compliance with guidelines and regulatory agencies that impact healthcare and health information management." With no experience of her own with the topic, the chair sent an email to all regional members asking for proposals to speak on the topic.
You received her email and immediately got to work on your proposal. As the HIM Director of a large acute care hospital, you have a lot of experience with compliance. You are currently a co-chair on the hospital's compliance committee and known for your advocacy of ensuring the hospital and the HIM department is operating in compliance with federal and state laws. A week after submitting the proposal, you get a phone call from the chair. She has accepted your proposal and chosen you to speak at the regional meeting.
As you begin to work on your speech, you decide to also include a fact sheet to distribute to the attendees at the regional meeting. You would like each attendee to be able to bring information and ideas back to their own facilities.
In a fact sheet to distribute to the meeting's attendees. Include the following:
An assessment of the role that key federal and state regulatory agencies have on healthcare. Include specific regulatory agencies and their impact on healthcare.
An evaluation of how Medicare monitors regulation and compliance in healthcare. Incorporate specific regulations that Medicare monitors.
A justification on advocating for regulations and guidelines supporting health information practices. Include reasons health information professionals should advocate for complying with regulations that support health information.
