Question
Many genetic ethical issues exist in today's healthcare environment. The ethical and philosophical issues surrounding the human genome center on three core concerns:
Privacy and confidentiality
Genetic testing
Altering the genetic code through genetic therapies
1. The ability to manipulate human genotypes and phenotypes raises a number of important ethical questions. For this project, you will be assigned one of these genetic issues with ethical implications (Designer babies).
2. Research the issues along with the pros and cons.
3. Develop an argument for each side.
4. Discuss what side you personally agree with.
5. Integrate relevant learning from chapters 9-11.
Consider the following questions in your research:
What criteria should be met before proving that an experimental therapy is safe enough and ethical enough to begin investigating in humans?
Is the scientific review process sufficient? What constitutes adequate oversight of gene therapy trials?
Are protocol guidelines in the best interest of research study participants?
Who decides which traits are normal and which constitute a disability or disorder?
Will the high costs of gene therapy make it available only to the wealthy?
Could the widespread use of gene therapy make society less accepting of people who are different?
Should gene therapy be used to enhance basic human traits, such as height, intelligence, or athletic ability?
Should gene therapy be used to alter germ-line traits?
How can "good" and "bad" uses of gene therapy be distinguished?
