"The numbers don't lie," says Hattie Singh, the Manager of the Silver City Distribution Centre. Silver City is a distribution centre, with 350 employees in its operation. "There is an unacceptably high level of absenteeism in this organisation. On any day of the week up to 30% of our employees do not turn up for their scheduled shift." As a distribution centre, Silver City employs "pickers" to process customer orders. After a customer places an online order a picker walks around the stands in the distribution centre to find, scan, and pack the items before placing the box on a conveyor belt for postage. The high level of absenteeism is a problem because it slows down the shipping of customer orders, which then generates a lot of complaints via email and telephone calls. Recently some managers have been demanding that the pickers process the same number of orders irrespective of how many pickers turn up for work to discourage employees from being absent from work. The Head of Marketing suggests that Silver City set up an employee health and wellbeing program to reduce the level of absenteeism. Employees would be able to access the local gym and swimming pool before and after work at no cost. Employees would also be able to attend lunch time sessions on nutrition and exercise, again at no cost to the employee. Should Hattie support the proposal for an employee health and well-being program at Silver City Distribution Centre? Why or why not?
