A major public health threat for a long time has been cigarette smoking. Despite the awareness around the repercussions of smoking cigarettes, cigarettes are still the leading cause of disease and cancer in the United States. The American Cancer Society states that smoking is responsible for around 480,000 deaths annually in the United States. Smoking is a danger to more than just cancer, it affects all organs in the body and many chronic illnesses. In this paper we will look at how cigarette smoking can reduce your lifespan and cause cancer and how it can affect your body systems, it has detrimental impacts on wildlife, and lastly secondhand smoke has consequences on children. Cigarette smoking is a leading cause of preventable death and disease. Smoking cigarettes can contribute to cancer and mortality and around 20% of all cancers and 30% of cancer deaths in the United States are caused by smoking cigarettes (Health Risks of Smoking Tobacco, n.d.). A major cancer linked to cigarettes is lung cancer with about 80% of cases associated with smoking cigarettes (Health Risks of Smoking Tobacco, n.d.).
