Question

The main intervention of the program is to implement training for the community to recognize and respond to opioid overdose. To effectively execute on the training, patients and family members, doctors and healthcare workers, and law enforcement all must receive training to recognize and respond to these types of situations. It will be important for patients to understand how to properly administer nasal and intramuscular Narcan and for family to recognize any issues with opioid medication and specifically overdoses. Doctors and healthcare workers must give accurate and detailed information to help prevent overdose, and for law enforcement to recognize the signs of an overdose. Since education is a major step in effectively executing on this intervention, detailed information will be provided. First, seminars and educational materials in the form of pamphlets will be distributed to the community. The material in these will focus on overdose awareness, risk factors, and treatments. Additionally, take-home naloxone programs will be given. A major part of getting this information around will rely on collaboration from various community groups, namely, pharmacies, doctor's offices, fire and police stations and township centers will have the materials and help with distribution. Finally, in order to measure the effectiveness of the education materials, we will measure the number of community members trained in recognition and response. Ways to recognize opioid addiction include: understanding the risk factors such as genetics, family history, external influences in the community, emotional instability, and our childhood environment. Lastly, a tertiary prevention would include individuals who suffer from addiction be directed toward rehabilitations to guide the individual on the path to recovery. This can be as easy as helping each person find rehabs that take their insurance and answer any questions about the detoxification process.
