Assessment description

Through engaging in the weekly online module presentations and readings, this assessment task will have you address 3 questions. The assessment will involve components of research, critical analysis, and self-evaluation.

Purpose

The purpose of this assessment is to provide you with experience in reflecting on your own career aspirations and the skills and characteristics that are required to work in your preferred field, and in sourcing and understanding literature about a specific population subgroup.

This assessment task will help you acquire and demonstrate the following Learning Outcomes:

Learning Outcome (ULO)

ULO 1: Describe physical activity patterns and influences amongst sub-groups within the population and explain the role of key organisations that promote physical activity, exercise and health to the various population groups.

ULO 2: Analyse and communicate information relating to the physical activity and health industry to scientific and non-scientific audiences using both written and oral communication methods.

ULO 3: Locate and interpret relevant information sources for informing an understanding of organisations and vocational roles in the physical activity, exercise and health industry.

ULO4: Identify individual skills and strengths they bring to the field, as well as areas for self- and career development.

Assessment instructions

To complete the assessment, you will draw on content from weeks 1-10 and answer each question within the number of words written beside each question. Please note the number of marks each question is worth.

Section 1 is two general questions, please write your answers in paragraph form (not bullet points). Section 2 requires you to locate a current job posting and write a brief "response to selection criteria" to apply for that job. For this section, you can use either paragraph form or bullet points.

PLEASE ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: (limit each answer to suggested word limit indicated beside the question):

SECTION #1 - General Questions (8 marks)

Following on from the LinkedIn profile you created in AT1, make a post in the ‘HSE112 group' that you joined. Write about what career you are interested in and list two actions you will take during the time you are studying your undergraduate degree to help you land a job of interest. These must be actions that are separate to your university study (i.e., don't write "I will study hard and get good grades"). However, these can include specific internships or volunteering you do through university. Include the text of your post in your submitted assignment, but it must be posted to the LinkedIn group to receive any marks. (2 marks, 100 - 125 words).

Locate a journal article reporting on results from an intervention which aimed to increase physical activity among people living with a chronic disease, and briefly summarise the intervention and its findings. Please paraphrase and summarise the article, do not copy and paste text from the article (students who copy and paste will receive 0 marks for this section, and may receive an allegation of plagiarism and face disciplinary action as a result). Your summary should describe the sample (who was included in the study?), the intervention (what did the researchers do to change the behaviour of the participants?), and the results of the study (What changes in behaviour or other outcomes did they achieve?). Refer to the examples provided in Module 9 for how to do this. Make sure you cite the article correctly in the paragraph and include a reference list using APA7 style. (6 marks, 150 - 175 words)

SECTION #2 - Job Application Writing Task (12 marks)

Create a "response to selection criteria" to be included with a job application for a current job posting of your choice. The position should be specific to the physical activity, exercise, and health industry, and may be connected to any population subgroup. A key aspect of this task is to deeply engage with the selection criteria (e.g., skills, qualifications, qualities, etc) needed for the job you select and document how you can demonstrate them. You must use the STAR technique (see Modules 5 and 6) in your response to selection criteria. You are unlikely to be able to address all selection criteria within the word limit, so please address at least two separate criteria. (12 marks, 500-550 words)

Attach a screenshot of the job posting, including the list of selection criteria, as an Appendix. Please note, in many cases the job ad will not include the selection criteria, you might need to request a full position description. Some jobs, especially those in the private sector, do not publish a list of selection criteria - if you find you have chosen a job that does not have clearly identified selection criteria, please locate a different job!
