The worst thing that can happen to you if you don't supervise or delegate properly is that you may be liable for a criminal offense. Ultimately, going beyond that fact, we can consider patient harm and even death because we did not properly supervise or delegate. That error would weigh on the consciousness of that individual, and that is something I think we all would never want to carry. It is our duty as registered nurses if we delegate we consider the: right task, right circumstance, right person, right supervision, and the right direction and communication was provided. These rights are there to guide nurses to be able to provide the best care for the patient, but most importantly, they are in place to keep the patient safe. For example, if a registered nurse delegates the task of first oral feeding to a patient with recent CVA to the CNA, and asks the CNA to let them know how they tolerated the feeding. This scenario is a poor example all around and potentially can have a really bad outcome. It is critical that nurses and individuals involved know what can be delegated and what should be refused. There is so much at stake when considering delegation and all the time spent achieving an RN license can swiftly be taken away because of the lack of judgment.
