Most of the legalities in nursing are derived from legislative statutes. Some statutes are local, some are state, and some are federal. For federal issues, laws are passed through votes from Congress. Decisions that fall on the state are things like the scope of practice for APRNs in that state and the regulation of healthcare organizations within the state (Joel, 2022). Currently, the abortion laws in North Carolina are still relatively strict; however, many US states have changed their laws to enable women to have an abortion much farther along in the pregnancy. I am strongly against abortion and hope that our laws remain the same. My family and I considered it to be a loss that abortion was made legal at all. One way that I can advocate for my healthcare beliefs in relation to abortion is through a petition. I could get fellow leaders to sign the petition and let the leaders in the state of North Carolina know that people still support their decision to keep abortion laws limited. At this time, women in North Carolina must have parental consent if under the age of 18 and cannot have the procedure done if more than 20 weeks.
